Beginner drum kits: proper instruments for new drummers
Choosing a first drum kit should be exciting, not confusing. At Graham Russell Drums, the beginner acoustic drum kits we recommend are proper musical instruments rather than toys. They can be tuned, maintained and upgraded, and a good starter drum set can take a new player from their first lesson to rehearsals and gigs.

The Quick Answer
For the best all-round, full-sized beginner acoustic drum kit, our first recommendation is the Sonor AQX 20 Studio or Sonor AQX 22 Stage. These are genuine, long-lasting drum kits with full-sized shells, sturdy hardware and B8 bronze cymbals. They sound good from the start and are capable of rehearsals and gigging as the player develops.

What does a beginner drum kit need?
A complete acoustic setup needs more than the drums themselves. The beginner packages highlighted in our main guide include the drums, cymbals and essential hardware such as a bass drum pedal, hi-hat stand, cymbal stands and snare stand. A drum stool and drumsticks are normally added separately. Package contents can vary, so always check the individual product page before ordering.

A supportive drum stool, suitable drumsticks, a drum mat and hearing protection.
You do not need to upgrade a good beginner kit immediately. When the time comes, fresh two-ply Evans or Remo batter heads are an easy way to improve durability and make tuning more forgiving. An Evans EMAD or Remo SMT bass drum head can tighten the kick sound; a small pillow also works. Simple snare dampening can control unwanted overtones. Cymbals can be changed one at a time later, but they cannot be tuned, which is why the B8 bronze cymbals supplied with an AQX are a meaningful step above the very thin, cheap yellow cymbals found with some entry-level sets.
Which beginner acoustic drum kit should I choose?
The right first acoustic drum kit depends on the player’s height, available space and how long you want the kit to remain useful. A 20-inch bass drum is not merely a children’s size: it is a versatile full-sized option that is easier to position and transport. A 22-inch bass drum gives the familiar larger rock-kit feel and a little more low-end presence.

What is the best drum kit for a beginner?
For a full-sized acoustic kit that feels like a proper instrument and can last through lessons, rehearsals and early gigs, we recommend the Sonor AQX 20 Studio or AQX 22 Stage. The best size depends on the player, room and preferred setup.
Should a beginner buy an acoustic or electronic drum kit?
Choose acoustic drums for the natural sound, feel and response of a traditional kit. Choose electronic drums when headphone practice, volume control or a smaller footprint is the priority. Trying both in person is the clearest way to decide.
Does a beginner drum kit include everything needed to play?
The complete acoustic packages featured in our main beginner guide include the drums, cymbals and essential hardware. A stool and sticks are normally separate, and we also recommend a drum mat and hearing protection. Always confirm the exact contents on the product page.
Is a 20-inch bass drum only for children?
No. A 20-inch bass drum is a versatile professional-style size used by adults as well as younger drummers. It makes tom positioning easier, takes up slightly less room and is simpler to transport. A 22-inch bass drum offers the larger feel many players associate with rock kits.
Can a beginner drum kit be upgraded later?
Yes. Good beginner kits are designed to last. New drum heads, cymbals and small sound-control accessories can make significant improvements, but none is compulsory on day one. Start with a sound setup, learn to tune it and upgrade only when the player knows what they want to change.
