Drum heads were originally made from calfskin and although the sound was fantastic, due to differing weather conditions, the tuning would change dramatically. In the late 1950's a plastic drum head was developed which was a game changer. Over the years, many different varieties of drum heads have been launched onto the market in response to the musical requirements of drummers. Generally speaking, clear drum heads will the player give more attack and it can be said that coated drum heads are perhaps warmer and may have a fuller sound. A 1 ply drum head is incredibly versatile, although the drummer may be wanting a fatter sound so may consider a 2 ply drum head. The choices and combinations of drum heads available are infinite- we encourage you to search, experiment & discover!
