How to tune drums: The Complete GRD Breakdown

Tuning a drum kit can feel complicated when you first start because there is no single correct note for every tom, snare or bass drum. Two drummers can tune the same kit very differently and both end up with a great result. The important thing is learning how to tension each head evenly, understand how the batter and resonant heads interact, and then shape the sound to suit your playing. At Graham Russell Drums, I have regularly headed and tuned new acoustic kits for display, changed and tuned heads on second-hand kits before sale, and helped customers who bring in snares or full kits for reheading and tuning. One of the biggest lessons I have learned is that matching the pitch at each lug is only part of the process: the relationship between the top and bottom heads can make just as much difference to the finished sound. This guide gives you a practical starting method, explains what to listen and feel for, and shows how to deal with common tuning problems without assuming that every unwanted overtone needs more dampening. You only need a standard drum key to tune by ear. Drum tuning tools such as Tune-Bots and tension-based tuners are also available for players who prefer a more repeatable reference. Tightening a drumhead raises its pitch, but tuning changes more than pitch alone. Head tension also affects stick response, sustain, attack and how clearly the drum speaks. A very loose head can feel soft and produce a dull or papery note, while a head taken too high may move away from the deeper sound you were trying to achieve. One beginner mistake I have seen is tightening the heads excessively because the player wants a shorter, punchier sound. Tighter does not automatically mean punchier. For my own toms I generally prefer a fairly low tuning that retains plenty of body without allowing the heads to become so loose that the note dies or loses definition. The batter head is the surface you strike and has a major influence on attack, feel and the initial note. The resonant head underneath reacts to the movement of air inside the shell and plays a major role in sustain, pitch movement and the overall character of the drum. I normally start with the resonant head and prefer it slightly tighter than the batter for the low, punchy tom sound I like. Some drummers start with the batter instead, and either method can work. What matters most is that each head is tensioned evenly before you adjust the two heads together. There is no single correct relationship between the two heads. Different tunings create different results, and drumhead choice is also a major part of the final sound. A coated single-ply head such as an Ambassador, for example, behaves differently from a more controlled head such as a coated Powerstroke. Make sure the drumhead is in good enough condition to tune properly. If a coated head has become smooth across the playing area, is heavily marked, visibly dented, sounds unusually dead or has become difficult to tune evenly, replacement may make more sense than repeatedly trying to retune it. If you are fitting a new head, take the opportunity to wipe any dust or debris from the bearing edge and check that the head and hoop sit cleanly and evenly before tightening the rods. Do not forget the resonant heads. They are not struck, but they still stretch and age. An old resonant head can make a freshly reheaded drum surprisingly difficult to tune. I normally begin with the resonant head, although you can start with the batter if you prefer. Centre the head and hoop, then tighten every tension rod with your fingers until each one reaches light resistance and becomes difficult to turn without a key. With a new head, I apply a little even pressure to the centre before tuning. I am not trying to force it; the aim is simply to help the head seat and stretch evenly on the drum. Using a drum key, move from one tension rod to the rod opposite it in a star pattern rather than working around the hoop in a circle. This helps stop one side of the head becoming much tighter than the other. I often use relatively large, even turns at the beginning to bring the head into a sensible working range, then move to half- and quarter-turn adjustments as the tension rises. If you are new to tuning, smaller adjustments make it easier to hear what each change is doing. I also prefer bringing a drum slightly upwards in pitch rather than overshooting and repeatedly loosening it back down. Tap the head lightly a short distance in from each tension rod and compare the pitch. If the opposite head is already fitted, lightly mute it against a soft surface while checking the lug pitches so you can hear the head you are adjusting more clearly. I also like to think of the lugs as opposite pairs. If one lug sounds out of tune, a small tweak to the lug directly opposite can sometimes bring the head back into balance more effectively than only adjusting the lug you are listening to. I like the lug pitches to be pretty accurate, but I also physically feel different areas of the head. Sometimes a wider section can feel tighter or looser even when individual lug taps make the problem difficult to identify. Listening and feeling the head together can be more useful than relying on either method alone. Turn the drum over and use the same sequence on the batter side: finger-tighten the rods, bring the head up evenly in a star pattern, then make smaller adjustments until the pitches around the head are closely matched. Once both heads are reasonably even, strike the drum normally and listen to the complete note. This is where you begin adjusting the relationship between the two heads rather than treating them separately. If the drum has an unpleasant ring, strange pitch movement or too much sustain, make a small adjustment to one head and listen again. I often start with the resonant head. A surprisingly small change underneath the drum can sometimes remove the troublesome overtone completely. First get each individual head in tune with itself. Then tune the two heads in relation to each other. Play the toms together and make sure each drum has its own clear voice. I decide the intervals between my toms by ear rather than forcing them to specific musical notes. I use broadly the same process for rack and floor toms, but I generally keep the resonant head slightly tighter on a floor tom. I still want the batter fairly low for body and punch, but a little more tension underneath helps stop the larger drum becoming muddy or uncontrolled. The same basic process applies to a snare, although snare tunings can generally be taken considerably higher than tom tunings when the sound requires it. I begin with the snare-side resonant head. Starting from finger-tight, I use quarter- or half-turns in a star pattern until the head feels fairly tight but still has room to move upwards. I then tune the batter head and adjust the two heads together. The same pitch-and-feel check used on the toms applies here. I normally use a conventional 20-strand set of snare wires and tighten them until loose rattle disappears while making sure the drum still sounds lively and responsive. Wires that are too loose can rattle excessively, while wires that are too tight can choke the drum and make it sound dead. If a snare suddenly sounds lifeless, wire tension is one of the first things I check. A certain amount of sympathetic snare buzz is normal, but if it becomes excessive I also check the wire tension and setup rather than trying to eliminate every trace of snare response. Start with the same basic method used on the toms: bring the tension rods up evenly from finger-tight in an opposite-lug pattern, then gradually increase the tension until the head responds cleanly. I am less concerned with a precise pitch relationship on the bass drum than I am on the toms. I normally bring both the resonant and batter heads to a sensible tension and then adjust by sound and feel. The resonant head still matters. I keep mine at a sensible medium tension rather than leaving it extremely loose, then judge it by listening to the whole drum. My own resonant head has a port hole, which gives the drum a more focused response and makes internal microphone placement easier. An unported resonant head will generally retain more sustain and resonance, so the same tension will not necessarily produce exactly the same result. The batter should not be so loose that the beater feels as though it is sinking into the head, but I also do not want it so tight that the rebound becomes aggressive and starts fighting the foot. There is a useful middle ground where the pedal remains responsive while the drum still produces plenty of low-end weight. Head choice has a particularly large influence here. I personally use a Remo 22" Ambassador SMT Coated Bass Drum Head because I like the built-in control and punch it gives me. Shop-floor tip: I also use a pillow inside my own bass drum to shorten the sustain and keep the low end controlled. You do not necessarily need a lot of internal muffling, so start with a small amount and adjust by ear. Keep enough tension for the drum to respond cleanly, then experiment with the resonant head and head choice to retain definition while keeping the pitch low. Allow both heads to vibrate freely, use little or no dampening and avoid forcing either head below its natural working range. Single-ply or less-controlled heads can make this kind of response easier to achieve. Bring both heads further up while keeping the tension even. Higher tunings are common in jazz, although shell size and head choice still have a major influence on the finished sound. Some overtone is normal. If the ring is dramatically unpleasant, check the lug pitches first. If they are even, try a small adjustment to the relationship between the batter and resonant heads before changing the sound with dampening. Check that neither head is excessively loose and consider the condition of both heads. A worn resonant head can make a freshly reheaded drum unexpectedly difficult to tune. Try raising the resonant head slightly. Large drums can quickly lose definition when both heads are pushed very low. Check the snare wires first. Over-tightening them can reduce sensitivity and shorten the drum more than intended. Heads naturally settle and can lose tension over time, particularly after being newly fitted or after hard playing. Regular small retuning is normal. Players who repeatedly experience tension rods backing out can also consider tuning accessories or lug locks from our drum tuning range. I use very little dampening on my own toms. My rack toms are normally left open, while I use a Snareweight on the floor tom simply to stop the sustain becoming longer than I want. Dampening is useful for shaping a sound, but it should not automatically be used to hide uneven tuning. Get the drum tuning cleanly first, then use dampening if you deliberately want less sustain or a more controlled overtone. One of the clearest examples I have seen was a customer's Pearl Export that came in for new batter heads. After replacing the batters and lowering the tension of the existing resonant heads, the kit was transformed. The drums themselves had not changed; the combination of fresh heads and a better tuning relationship allowed them to work properly. This is why I would not assume that a disappointing drum kit needs replacing. I have heard expensive toms sound poor when badly tuned, while relatively affordable kits can sound excellent with suitable drumheads and careful tuning. I tune by ear and decide the spacing between drums by listening to the kit as a whole. I also pay attention to how the head feels because sometimes your hands reveal uneven tension that is harder to identify by ear. Tools such as a Tune-Bot or tension-based tuner can be useful for creating repeatable settings, but they are not required to learn how to make a drum sound good. Good tuning becomes much easier with repetition. Start with even tension, make small changes, listen to what happens and avoid changing several things at once. Over time you begin to recognise what a drum is telling you rather than simply following a fixed number of turns.
