Sonor Professional Drum Kits: The Ultimate Buyer's Guide

They are all superb, so the real question is not which Sonor sounds best, but which one is right for you. Our team of professional working drummers compares the three available pro lines, the Vintage Series, the brand-new Momentum and the fully custom SQ2, covering what makes each different, how the SQ2 build-to-order configurator works, and what to use each one for. Come and play them in our Fareham showroom, or read on to find your kit.

Sonor Professional Drum Kits: Vintage, Momentum and SQ2 Compared

Every kit in this guide is superb, and that is the honest place to start. The Vintage Series, the brand-new Momentum and the SQ2 are all Made in Germany, built to a standard most kits never reach, and they all sound fantastic. So “which one sounds best” is not really the question, because the truthful answer is all of them. What actually matters is the kind of sound and character you are after, how you want to buy the kit, and what you are going to use it for.

That is what this guide is about. At Graham Russell Drums, we are a team of experienced working drummers and drum specialists, with professional SONOR kits available to see and try in our Fareham showroom. Helping players find the right professional SONOR kit is one of our favourite jobs, especially when it comes to the SQ2 series.

Our colleague Luke designed his own SQ2 using the SONOR configurator, which shows just how personal these drums can be. His kit features a 12" x 8" rack tom, 16" x 16" floor tom and 22" x 14" bass drum, built with medium maple shells and finished in Candy Blue Burst over African Marble, with African Marble interiors, chrome hardware and chrome triple-flanged hoops. He also designed a matching 14" x 6.5" SQ2 snare drum, finished in Candy Blue Burst over African Marble, with a Scandinavian Birch interior, heavy maple shell, SONOR Hella die-cast hoops and chrome hardware.

That level of control is what makes SQ2 different. You are not just choosing a size and a colour. You can specify almost every detail of the drum, from the shell material, ply construction and shell thickness, to the inside and outside finishes, hardware finish, hardware size, hoop type, hoop material and tension rod type. It is SONOR’s fully custom professional series, built around the sound, feel and look you want.

So here are the three ranges, what makes each one different, and who each is for.

First, the part that decides the sound: the wood

At this level, the shells are where the character lives, and Sonor build these from a small family of tonewoods. Understanding them is most of the battle, because it tells you what each kit will do before you ever pick up a stick. Sonor describe them like this, and it matches what we hear in the room:

  • Maple is the warm one. Full, round and rich, with a strong low end. If you want depth, body and a kit that fills out a recording, maple is your wood.

  • Birch is the punchy one. It has a scooped, "smiley" voice with pronounced highs and lows, a focused attack and natural cut. It is a classic studio wood because it sits in a mix with very little fuss.

  • Beech is the all-rounder, and a wood Sonor are famous for. It sits tonally between birch and maple: warm and balanced, with even lows, mids and highs, plus an articulate attack. If you cannot decide, beech does almost everything well.

  • Acrylic (an SQ2 option) is not a wood at all. It is loud, cutting and punchy, with a big visual statement to match.

Keep those four in mind, because the difference between these kits is largely a difference in how you get to those sounds.

Sonor Vintage Series: the classic voice

The Vintage Series is Sonor's love letter to its own history, a modern kit that captures the sound and the look of the German-made classics. The shells are 9-ply beech at a thin 6mm, with rounded vintage bearing edges that give a warm, deep, resonant tone with a lovely consistent projection. The details complete the picture: the old-school teardrop lugs, the redesigned Superprofil hoops and traditional bass drum spurs. It looks like a kit from a golden era and it is built like a modern one.

Where it shines is character. If you love warm, woody, slightly retro tones, the kind that suit jazz, classic rock, soul and a lot of studio work, this is the Sonor that gets you there straight out of the box. It is also the most affordable way into a German-made Sonor kit, and it comes in classic finishes like Vintage Pearl, Rosewood and California Blue, in sizes from compact 20 inch setups up to a big 24 inch.

This is the one for the player who wants that timeless Sonor voice and look, ready to play today.

Sonor Momentum: the modern do-everything kit

Momentum is the newest kit here, launched in late 2025 for Sonor's 150th anniversary, and it is genuinely clever. The idea was to take the best bits from all of Sonor's German-made lines and put them into one modern, ready-to-play series, and that is exactly what it is. As of its launch it takes over from the old SQ1 and ProLite lines as Sonor's flagship production kit.

Here is the part that makes it special. The shells use Sonor's most popular 9-ply 6mm construction, the same medium shell from the SQ2, and you can have them in maple, birch or beech. Better still, you can choose the wood for each drum individually, and even combine all three in one kit, so you can build the exact tonal balance you want without going fully bespoke. The hardware is a greatest-hits package too: the ProLite T.A.R. tom mounts and the SQ1 Sound Sustainer floor tom system both let the shells ring freely, so there is real sustain and life to the toms. The shell depths even sit cleverly between the usual sizes for a more even feel across the kit.

It comes in four smart finishes, including the brand-new California Burl veneer, plus Red Pearl, GT Black and Satin Pure White. Sonor sum it up as premium SQ2 features at a production price, which is a fair way to put it, and the face of the series is the brilliant Jost Nickel.

This is the one for the modern working drummer who wants a top German kit, the freedom to tailor the woods to taste, and something they can play this week rather than wait for.

Sonor SQ2: design your own dream kit

This is the big one. The SQ2 is not a kit you pick off a shelf, it is a kit you design, hand-built for you in Germany to your exact wishes. It is the most personal drum system ever made, and no two are alike.

You build it in Sonor's SQ2 configurator, a 3D online designer where you choose everything. There are four shell materials (maple, birch, beech and X-ray acrylic), four shell constructions from thin to heavy plus a vintage option, around 160 shell sizes, and more than 260 finishes, from exotic veneers inside and out to high gloss lacquers, fades, bursts and wraps. You even choose your plating, in gold, chrome or ruthenium. The result is a kit that is exactly, and only, yours.

Here is how it works in practice. You spec the kit (with us, ideally, or on the configurator and then bring us the design), we confirm it and take a deposit, and Sonor build it by hand. Expect around a three month wait while they make it, which is part of the fun. This is where it pays to work with a proper Sonor dealer, because the choices are vast and it is easy to second-guess yourself. We will help you get the sound you are after and make sure the spec is right before it goes to Germany.

This is the one for the drummer who wants exactly their sound and their look, with no compromise, and a kit to keep for life. If you would like a taste of SQ2 craftsmanship without the full build, the SQ2 snare drums are a wonderful place to start.

So, which one is right for you?

It really does come down to what you want and what you will use it for:

  • For warm, classic, characterful tones, especially in the studio or for vintage styles: the Vintage Series. Timeless Sonor sound and looks, ready to play.

  • For a modern, versatile kit that does everything, with the freedom to pick or mix your woods: the Momentum. The do-it-all German production kit, and the newest design here.

  • For exactly your sound and look, a one-of-a-kind kit to keep forever: the SQ2. The full bespoke experience, worth every bit of the wait.

Still weighing it up? This is the fun part, and it is what we are here for. Come and play them side by side in the showroom, or give us a call on 01329 834012. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Sonor Vintage, Momentum and SQ2? All three are Made in Germany and sound superb, so the difference is character and how you buy them. The Vintage Series is a beech kit with a classic, warm, retro voice, ready off the shelf. The Momentum is a modern production kit where you can choose maple, birch or beech (or mix them) and play it today. The SQ2 is fully custom, built to order to your exact spec, so you design every detail.

Which Sonor kit is best for recording? Any of them will record beautifully, but birch and beech are the classic studio woods because they sit in a mix easily. A beech Vintage Series or a birch or beech Momentum is a brilliant studio kit. If you want a kit tuned exactly to your studio, an SQ2 lets you spec precisely that.

Which Sonor kit is best for gigging? The Momentum is the natural gigging choice: modern, versatile, ready to play and available in whichever woods suit your sound. A maple kit will give you the most power and low end live. Bear in mind the SQ2 is a heavier kit if you carry your own gear.

What woods can you get, and how do they sound? Maple is warm and full with a strong low end. Birch is punchy with pronounced highs and lows and natural cut. Beech is the balanced all-rounder, warm but articulate. The SQ2 also offers acrylic, which is loud and cutting. The Vintage Series is beech, the Momentum offers maple, birch or beech, and the SQ2 offers all four.

How does the Sonor SQ2 configurator work, and how do I order one? You design the kit in Sonor's SQ2 configurator, a 3D online tool where you choose the shells, sizes, finishes, hardware and plating. It gives your build a unique reference number. Bring that to us, or design it with us in the first place, and we confirm the order and take a deposit. Sonor then build it by hand. Working with a dealer is the best way to get the spec right, given how many options there are.

How long does an SQ2 take to build? Around three months from order, as each kit is made by hand to your specification.

Is the Momentum better than the SQ2? Neither is "better", they are different. The Momentum is a production kit you can buy and play now, with a choice of woods. The SQ2 is fully bespoke and built to order. The Momentum suits most working drummers brilliantly; the SQ2 is for when you want exactly your kit and nothing else.

Are these kits made in Germany? Yes, all three. The Vintage Series, the Momentum and the SQ2 are all Made in Germany at Sonor's factory in Berleburg.

I have been part of Graham Russell Drums since I was 15 in 2019 and now work here full-time. Starting on the shop floor, I have built and tuned hundreds and hundreds of drum kits across every price point and playing style, advised everyone from families buying a first kit to international touring drummers, and had my knowledge sharpened further by years of in-store clinics and masterclasses with some of the world's finest players. The advice here comes from that experience, not a spec sheet.
