Choosing a Wood Snare Drum
Wood snare drums are a popular choice for players looking for a rounded, natural response with plenty of body. At Graham Russell Drums, you can compare new and pre-owned wood snares in a wide range of sizes, shell constructions and finishes from leading drum manufacturers.
Which wood should you choose? The shell material is a useful starting point, although shell thickness, bearing edges, hoops, heads and tuning all help shape the finished sound.
- Maple is balanced, open and versatile.
- Birch usually gives a more focused attack and punchy response.
- Beech and oak suit players looking for strength, clarity and projection.
- Mahogany and walnut tend to offer a darker sound with more low-mid body.
A 14" snare is the most versatile starting point. Shallower 5" to 5.5" models generally feel quicker and more articulate, while 6.5" and deeper shells add weight and body. Smaller 12" and 13" snares can provide a tighter, higher-pitched voice or work well as a secondary snare.
