DW MFG True-Cast 14" x 4" Bronze Snare Drum at Graham Russell Drums
We have just had the new limited edition DW MFG True-Cast 14" x 4" bronze snare drum arrive with us at Graham Russell Drums, and it is a seriously special one.
This is the first ever DW MFG True-Cast piccolo snare drum, developed in collaboration with acclaimed DW artist Dave Elitch. That alone makes it interesting, but the real story is the shell. This is not just a standard bronze piccolo. It is built around a fully machined 14" x 4" sand-cast bell bronze shell, giving it the sharp response and fast attack you would expect from a piccolo, but with far more body, weight and projection than you might normally associate with a drum this shallow.
Why this shell matters
What really stands out to us is the way DW has shaped the shell. The profile is contoured from 5mm at the bearing edges to 3mm through the centre. That gives you the strength, attack and focus of bell bronze, while helping the drum open up and breathe a bit more through the middle of the shell.
In plain English, this should make it incredibly quick, articulate and sensitive, but without turning thin or one-dimensional. It is the kind of snare that could work as a main drum if you want something tight and explosive or as a serious auxiliary snare for recording, funk, pop, fusion, gospel, heavier studio work and anything where you need a snare that speaks instantly.
Proper DW MFG spec
The rest of the drum is exactly what you would hope to see on something from DW’s MFG Series. You get True-Cast counter hoops, precision-machined brass mini turret lugs, a brass mini MAG throw-off, True-Pitch® tension rods and 20-strand True-Tone® snare wires.
Everything about it feels built around control, tuning accuracy and response. The True-Cast hoops will help keep the attack focused, the brass hardware suits the shell perfectly, and the Mini MAG throw-off keeps the whole thing clean and professional without adding unnecessary bulk.
Limited to 100 worldwide
Only 100 of these drums have been produced worldwide, so this is not the kind of snare we expect to see very often. It is a proper collector’s piece, but it is also clearly built to be played. That is the nice thing about this one. It is rare enough for the DW collectors, but the spec is not just for show.
Each drum comes supplied in a custom DW MFG flight case by Calzone and includes a signed certificate of authenticity, so the whole package feels as limited and high-end as the drum itself.
