Ludwig Classic Maple "Downbeat" Drum Kit in Vintage Black Oyster

A 'classic' formula, Ludwig's 7-ply (6mm) North American Maple shells provide a sharp and punchy attack. Whilst maple is a bright sounding wood, the tone is well controlled offering an overall focused sound, even with the stock heads! Ludwig's "Downbeat" configuration provides standard drum sizes (12/14/20) and results in a striking projection with more emphasis on the mid-low qualities. Featuring 45-degree bearing edges, which are of standard for most drum kits, the sound provided is sharper overall and allows the drum heads to ring slightly more due to less contact between the shell and the head. Ludwig's chrome hardware is undoubtedly of industry standard, robust and reliable.

7-ply Cross-Laminated North American Maple.

Preferred by professionals for its tonal versatility, Classic Maple drums are the ideal choice for any performance application. Its high sensitivity, wide dynamic tuning range, and sharp attack make it the ideal choice for live performance. Yet Classic Maple's 7-ply shell is crafted to respond to the player and environment quickly, making it adaptable to any playing style or preference.

Bearing Edge

Each drum's bearing edge is cut to a 45-degree angle within 1/16" from the outside edge. This sharp edge is hand-sanded to the craftsman's touch to assure a smooth, even, flat surface for easy head seating; the final touch to complete the unmistakable Ludwig Sound.

RFST Molding

Classic Maple's standard 7-ply, 6mm shell is formulated for optimum resonance and tonality. Its centre three-ply core panel (laminated in a horizontal/vertical/horizontal grain bond to a 2.4mm thickness) is inserted between inner and outer two-ply panels through Ludwig’s proprietary RFST moulding process.

To increase stability throughout the drum, all Ludwig USA shells are produced using Radio Frequency Shell Technology. Using a process involving Ludwig’s original bladder moulds, R.F.S.T.'s unique bonding system, combined with a specialised, time-tested adhesive, cures each shell evenly over the entire surface. This process is a principal ingredient in creating the "Ludwig Sound".

The Ludwig Drum Company

Ludwig is undoubtedly one of the most famous names in drums. The Ludwig Drum Company was founded in 1909, and its products quickly became popular with drummers due to the quality and sound of the drums. The Ludwig brand reigned supreme in the 1960s, partly because of the breakthrough of The Beatles. They appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, where an estimated 73 million people saw the Ludwig name clearly displayed on Ringo Starr's bass drum head. After that appearance, countless drummers wanted to play Ludwig.
