For more than a decade, Ludwig Breakbeats by Questlove has been a go-to compact drum kit for players who want genuine Ludwig character in a setup that can fit into smaller stages, rehearsal rooms, studios and home practice spaces.

Now refreshed for a new generation of drummers, the latest Breakbeats keeps the compact proportions and portability that made the original so popular while introducing updated hardware and a striking new Lilac Sparkle finish.

Built around 7-ply poplar shells, this four-piece configuration combines a punchy 16" bass drum with compact 10" and 13" toms and a matching 14" snare drum. The result is a complete acoustic setup with a footprint considerably smaller than a conventional full-size drum kit.

Compact Ludwig Sound

The Breakbeats configuration has been designed around portability without reducing the kit to toy-like proportions. The 16" x 14" bass drum forms the foundation of the setup, offering a compact footprint while retaining enough depth to produce a convincing acoustic bass drum response.

A 10" x 7" rack tom and 13" x 13" floor tom create a useful spread across the kit, while the included 14" x 5" snare drum keeps the setup feeling like a complete acoustic drum kit rather than simply a compact shell pack.

The smaller shell sizes also make Breakbeats particularly practical where space is limited, whether you are working on a cramped stage, setting up in a rehearsal room or building a compact home or studio kit.

7-Ply Poplar Shells

Each drum is constructed from 7-ply poplar and finished with Ludwig's distinctive wrap finish. Poplar provides the foundation for the familiar Breakbeats sound while keeping the shells practical and manageable for a kit designed to travel.

All four drums are fitted with Ludwig Micro Classic lugs and chrome-plated hardware, giving the kit a clean Ludwig appearance despite its compact dimensions.

The new Lilac Sparkle finish brings a completely different visual character to the Breakbeats range, combining the traditional sparkle aesthetic with a modern colour that immediately stands out on stage or in the studio.

Updated Hardware and Mounting

This refreshed generation of Breakbeats introduces several practical hardware updates designed to improve setup and positioning.

The rack tom is supported using Ludwig's Vibra-Band suspension tom holder, with the required tom mount included. The bass drum features the updated Kick Drum Riser V2 together with Evolution kick drum legs, while the floor tom uses Ludwig's Evolution floor tom brackets.

These updated components retain the portable nature of the Breakbeats concept while giving the kit a more refined and practical setup for everyday playing.

Designed to Travel

One of the defining advantages of Breakbeats has always been portability. Its smaller shell sizes make the kit easier to transport, easier to position and particularly useful for players regularly moving between rehearsals, gigs, teaching spaces or recording sessions.

A set of gig bags is included, making the Breakbeats package especially convenient for drummers who need a compact acoustic setup that can move with them.
