This Yamaha Recording Custom 4pc shell pack in Real Wood is now available with us at Graham Russell Drums!

The Yamaha Recording Custom is one of the most respected and influential drum kits ever produced, renowned for its unmistakable studio-focused sound and exceptional consistency. Originally developed alongside legendary recording engineer Steve Gadd, the Recording Custom series became a benchmark for professional recording drums thanks to its focused tone, controlled sustain and incredible clarity under microphones. Decades later, it remains one of the most sought-after birch drum kits in the world.

This configuration features a 22" x 14" bass drum, 10" x 7" and 12" x 8" mounted toms and a 16" x 15" floor tom, offering a highly versatile setup that balances modern punch with classic Recording Custom response. The shallower 22" bass drum provides a fast, articulate low-end with excellent definition and noticeably quicker response than deeper modern kick drums, whilst still delivering the punch and authority expected from a professional birch shell pack.

The shells are constructed from 100% North American birch, a key part of the Recording Custom sound. Birch naturally produces a focused attack with enhanced low-end punch and controlled sustain, helping the drums sit exceptionally well within a mix without excessive overtones. The toms feature 6-ply, 6mm shells, whilst the bass drum uses an 8-ply, 8mm shell construction for added projection and low-frequency power. Combined with Yamaha’s precision-cut 30-degree bearing edges, the result is a sound that feels tight, punchy and incredibly refined across a wide tuning range.

The mounted toms utilise Yamaha’s renowned YESS mounting system, designed to minimise shell contact and allow the drums to resonate more freely without sacrificing stability. The kit is also fitted with Yamaha’s distinctive low-mass high-tension lugs, helping maximise shell resonance whilst providing the exceptional tuning stability Yamaha drums are known for. Finished with classic triple-flanged hoops and chrome hardware throughout, the overall feel remains open, responsive and unmistakably Recording Custom.

Visually, the Real Wood lacquer finish gives the kit a timeless and understated appearance, allowing the natural grain of the birch shells to remain clearly visible beneath the satin finish. Combined with the clean lines, elegant hardware and iconic Yamaha badge design, the overall aesthetic feels refined, professional and unmistakably high-end.

This is a shell pack built for players who value precision, consistency and exceptional tonal control, whether in the studio, on stage or in demanding professional recording environments.
