The GRD drumming community flocked to the Ashcroft Arts Centre in Fareham on Sunday 27th May, 2018, for a very special Masterclass with one of the greatest drummers to have ever walked the planet.
The legendary Mr. Peter Erskine was, as always, on truly top form. Those in attendance were treated to many anecdotes & insights gathered over the course of a 50+ year career in the music industry. Peter began the afternoon by playing along to a Bob Mintzer Big Band arrangement which was in the style of the late, great Count Basie. Peter's touch & taste at the drum set is truly exquisite; the way he set up the brass figures was remarkable and executed in a completely relaxed & musical manner.
Peter told some truly wonderful stories from his days with Weather Report & Steely Dan to an audience on the edge of their seats. Peter also recounted a very amusing story about the time he had decided to book a lesson with the late legendary drum instructor Freddy Gruber - the man Peter credits for gaining the ability to dance on the drums!
After a beautiful, improvised solo at the drum set, Peter then took to the front of the stage with a snare drum and a pair of brushes to demonstrate the importance of getting a good sound out of the brushes with sweeping strokes from different hand positions & directions; a wonderful sound!
Peter left the stage to rupturous applause and made his way to the foyer area where the GRD drumming community were then able to have Peter sign possessions such as GRD drumheads, old albums, instructional books, snare drums and even cymbals. It was also a great opportunity to have photos taken with the great man.
Peter Erskine is a true master of our art and a joy to be around; a complete gentleman! If you ever get the chance to see or hear this man play, please do grab it with both hands. Another wonderfully successful GRD Masterclass, we sure are looking forward to the next one!
